Red corn contains natural antioxidants that are excellent for your health. 🌱 Sowing & Spacing Guide
To successfully grow corn in pots, you must follow a few simple direct-sowing guidelines:
- Container Selection: If you want to grow them in containers, a minimum of a 12 x 12-inch Grow bag or a deep plastic pot is required for a single plant. However, if you use a larger container like a long rectangular crate, you can grow two or three plants together.
- Soil Preparation: First, gather good quality organic compost and regular garden soil. Next, mix them together thoroughly to create a loose, well-draining, and nutrient-rich soil mix. You can also add some cocopeat to help the soil retain moisture during hot summer afternoons.
- Direct Sowing: Crucially, sow your corn seeds directly into your chosen pots or final garden beds. Note that corn plants do much better when planted directly instead of growing separate seedlings and moving them later. Moving the young plants can damage their delicate roots.
- Plant Spacing: Subsequently, sow the seeds while keeping a strict 1 to 2 feet of distance between them. In doing so, you ensure the roots and stalks have plenty of room to grow without fighting for nutrients.
☀️ Sun, Water & Climate Requirements
- Sunlight: Above all, select an area that receives bright, direct sunlight all day long. Corn needs at least 6 to 8 hours of daily sunlight to create sweet ears. In contrast, corn plants will stay small and weak if you place them in shady areas.
- Watering: Meanwhile, water your plants every alternate day based on your local soil moisture conditions. However, always ensure the soil remains damp but never muddy or waterlogged. Too much water will cause the roots to rot and kill the plant.
- Lifespan & Care: Additionally, check the soil with your finger before watering. If the top inch feels dry, it is time to water. During heavy summer days, you might need to water them daily.
💡 Important Note: For the best sprouting results, please use all the seeds within 2 weeks after they reach you.
🌾 Advanced Care: Hand Pollination Tips for Container Corn
When you grow corn in pots, pollination can sometimes be a challenge. In large fields, the wind easily carries pollen from one plant to another. However, on a closed balcony or terrace, you might need to help the plant.
Corn plants have two main parts for making corn ears: the tassels at the very top and the silks on the side of the stalk. The tassels drop fine powder called pollen. The silks catch this powder to form the corn kernels.
To easily hand-pollinate your balcony corn, gently shake the main stalk once a day when the tassels open up. Alternatively, you can collect the yellow dust from the top tassels using a clean, dry paint brush. Afterwards, gently brush this powder directly onto the sticky green silks growing lower down on the plant. Doing this simple step ensures that your red corn ears grow full, plump, and packed with sweet kernels.
